Solve the most common mathematical exercises in school, with formulas and calculators showing every step of the calculation, including explanations and intermediate results. Mathinary is concentrated on math in schools from the third to the tenth grade, but also covering topics used in higher educations. Mathinary is an invaluable app for children in school, their parents and others who needs help with math or those who just want to freshen up their knowledge. The following topics are covered: * Plane geometry Annulus, circle, circular segment, circular sector, parabola, parallelogram, polygon, points and lines, rectangle, rhombus, square, trapezoid/trapezium, triangle (construction, right and common) and the unit circle. There seems to be paucity of research in South Africa on mathematics teachers' reflective practice. In order to study this phenomenon, the context of lesson study (in an adapted form) was introduced to five mathematics teachers in a rural school in the Free State. The purpose was to investigate their reflective practice whilst they collaboratively planned mathematics lessons and reflected on the teaching of the lessons. Data were obtained through interviews, video-recorded lesson observations, field notes taken during the lesson study group meetings and document analyses (lesson plans and reflective writings). The adapted lesson study context provided a safe space for teachers to reflect on their teaching and they reported an increase in self-knowledge and finding new ways of teaching mathematics to learners. This finding has some potential value for planning professional learning programmes in which teachers are encouraged to talk about their classroom experiences, share their joys and challenges with one another and strive to build a community of reflective practitioners to enhance their learners' understanding of mathematics. The low achievement trap-Comparing schools in Botswana and South Africa
"The Low Achievement Trap is an empirical study of student mathematics learning in Grade 6 classrooms that is unique in its focus on two school systems shaped by different political histories on either side of the Botswana-South Africa border. The study provides a detailed examination of the capacity of teachers - how they teach, how much they teach, and what they teach. Because of this wealth of detail, The Low Achievement Trap gives us much greater insight than previous research into why students seem to be making larger gains in the classrooms of South Eastern Botswana than in those of North West Province, South Africa. Rather than identifying a single major factor to explain this difference, the study finds that a composite of inter-related variables revolving around teachers’ mathematics knowledge and their capacity to teach mathematics are crucial to improving education in both regions. The message is a hopeful one: good teachers can make a difference in student learning."

Living Maths Olympiad 2012
Dear Maths Colleagues,
I am very pleased to announce that the Olympiad papers/notices/resources etc. are available for download!
We have decided to move away from making a CD this year and we are allowing schools to download all the content. The Olympiad caters for ALL learner abilities from grade R up to grade 9. Last year we had about 160 000 South African participants and about 7000 international participants. This year we hope to have many more.
You will find a folder with notices for South African notices - these notices tell you about the event and there is also a set of instructions on how to run a hassle-free event.
The Olympiad materials have been placed in a dropbox folder. Please feel free to forward this link to any teacher/colleague or organisation that would encourage learners to think!

What Makes 100%?
What does it mean to give MORE than 100%?
Ever wonder about those people who say they are giving more than 100%? We have all been to those meetings where someone wants you to give over 100%.
How about achieving 103%?
Here's a little mathematical formula that might help you answer these questions:

Equal Education urgently seeking part-time Maths and English teachers
EE runs a post-matric programme for 20 of its members, known as the Community Leadership Programme. The programme combines academic tutoring with political leadership and training. The aim of the programme is to build a cohesive group of young activists committed to the ideals and work of Equal Education, and to their place in it, and equipped with the academic capability needed to progress individually and collectively. At the end of the academic year, participants re-write a number of their subjects.
We are urgently seeking motivated and dedicated individuals to teach Mathematics (Maths and Maths Lit) and English (Home Language and First Additional). The positions are part-time and remunerated. Classes run in the mornings from 8h30 to 13h00. The academic component of the programme is based at 6 Spin Street, Cape Town.
In addition to the minimum contact time required for each subject (plus-minus 4-5 hours a week), teachers are expected to submit teaching plans (in line with curriculum and WCED requirements), and set and grade tests, exams and assignments. Given that participants submit new School Based Assessment (SBA) marks, teachers will also need to ensure that portfolios and mark sheets are compiled for the purposes of external moderation. Applicants should preferably have 2-3 years teaching experience. Retired teachers are encouraged to apply.
